How it works
One request instead of five phone calls
Getting hardscape quotes usually means calling half a dozen companies, waiting for callbacks and comparing estimates that don't describe the same job. NE Landscapers keeps it to one conversation. Tell us what you're planning and where you live, and we'll review it and follow up with you. We're adding contractors town by town, and each area will have one.
We work with at most one contractor per area. We don't do the work or set the price. Your estimate, contract and schedule are between you and the contractor.
- Tell us about the project. Call or send the short form. A rough idea of size and what's there now is plenty.
- We review your request. We read every request and follow up with you about the next step.
- A site visit comes before a real estimate. Hardscape prices depend on access, soil and grade, so an accurate estimate means someone looks at the yard.

What to sort out before work starts
Get it in writing. For work covered by the Massachusetts home improvement contractor law, such as retaining walls and decks, a contract over $1,000 has to be written, and the deposit is capped at one-third of the price unless special-order materials cost more. Routine landscaping and ground-level patios often fall outside those rules, so ask for a written contract on every job anyway. Get the scope, materials, base depth and drainage details on paper so two estimates can actually be compared.
Know which jobs need a registered contractor. Routine landscaping and ground-level patios are exempt from state Home Improvement Contractor registration when that's all a company does. Retaining walls and decks are not. Registration matters if something goes wrong: the state Guaranty Fund only covers work by registered contractors.
Walls over four feet need a permit. The state building code exempts retaining walls up to four feet, measured from the bottom of the footing, unless the wall supports a surcharge, such as a driveway or a building above it. Taller walls need a building permit and a licensed construction supervisor on the job.
Within 100 feet of wetlands, ask first. Most work near a wetland, pond or stream needs a filing with the town's conservation commission before it starts, and many towns have their own bylaws on top of the state rules. Town pages list the local commission.
Someone has to call Dig Safe. Anyone excavating has to notify Dig Safe (811) at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. Dig Safe says property owners and contractors are both required to call, so agree in writing who places the ticket.
FAQ
Common questions
Is there a charge to use NE Landscapers?
No. The call and the referral are free to homeowners. Your estimate and any work are agreed directly between you and the contractor.
Who will call me back?
NE Landscapers reviews every request and follows up with you about next steps. We don't do landscaping work ourselves.
Will my information go to a bunch of companies?
No. At most it goes to the one contractor who covers your area.
Do you handle lawn mowing or weekly maintenance?
No. NE Landscapers is for projects: patios, walkways, retaining walls, planting plans, drainage and outdoor living areas. Weekly mowing and cleanups are outside what we refer.
When should I call about a spring project?
Winter is a good time. Design work, site visits and permit questions can all happen before the ground thaws, so the job is ready to start when the season opens.
